Welcome Message HT 2007

Dear Students,

My name is Alison Dalton, and I am the Careers Officer at Exeter College, having taken over from Daragh McDowell since the start of 2007. I hope to meet many of you during the coming weeks. The Careers Office is unique amongst Oxford colleges, and provides a highly valuable service which I would urge all of you to make use of while you are here.

Internships

The main purpose of the Careers Office is to arrange internships for College students. Several placements in a wide variety of organizations have already been agreed with employers for summer 2007 and others are being progressed. These are extremely worthwhile opportunities not only to get to know at first hand what it is like to work for these organizations, but also to help clarify what career you might wish to pursue after your studies.

This link takes you to those internships currently on offer. I urge you not to delay; most employers would prefer the application process to start as soon as possible, and some have application deadlines during January and February. If you would like to speak to students who took up internships in 2006, please get in touch with me (careers@exeter.ox.ac.uk). Last year, Exeter had students working as far away as Mumbai, in Dublin and in Paris, as well as in the City and in Oxford itself.

Careers Events

Tuesday 6th February (Week 4 of HT) - Career Evening
Professionals (some Old Members) from 4-5 companies will talk about their careers and organizations, and then will be available to chat informally over a buffet supper. This is a marvellous opportunity to meet people from different fields of expertise and experience; some of their organizations will also be offering internships.
The event will start at 7.00 p.m. in the Saskatchewan Room. Further details will be sent out nearer the date.
Tuesday 1st May (Week 2 of TT) - CV Clinic
Alison Dalton, Careers Officer, together with her business colleague Dr. John Russell, will be available between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. to give advice on your CV and covering letters.

As an added incentive, may I remind you that it is the policy of the Careers Office and the Development Office to offer a preferential service to students who have attended at least one event. Many of our internships operate on a basis of pre-selection by the College, and attendance at an event will be taken into account when making these selections. If you are considering taking on a summer internship, or would like careers advice and assistance, I strongly recommend that you take part!

Finally, please get in touch with me if I can help with careers advice in general; for example, if you need a trained eye to look over a CV. Although I am a D.Phil. student, I have run a business for many years, and been both an employer and employee. I would also welcome any feedback or comments about the Careers Office so that I can continue to improve this unique service to better meet your needs. Thank you.
