The Exeter College Careers Office functions as a resource for students looking to gain valuable workplace experience before they leave the college and pursue their careers. Any questions relating to internships or simply to general careers advice can be addressed to Daragh McDowell, the current careers officer, through careers@exeter.ox.ac.uk.

My name is Alison Dalton, and I am the Careers Officer at Exeter College, having taken over from Daragh McDowell since the start of 2007. I hope to meet many of you during the coming weeks. The Careers Office is unique amongst Oxford colleges, and provides a highly valuable service which I would urge all of you to make use of while you are here.
The main purpose of the Careers Office is to arrange internships for College students. Several placements in a wide variety of organizations have already been agreed with employers for summer 2007 and others are being progressed. These are extremely worthwhile opportunities not only to get to know at first hand what it is like to work for these organizations, but also to help clarify what career you might wish to pursue after your studies.
This link takes you to those internships currently on offer. I urge you not to delay; most employers would prefer the application process to start as soon as possible, and some have application deadlines during January and February. If you would like to speak to students who took up internships in 2006, please get in touch with me (careers@exeter.ox.ac.uk). Last year, Exeter had students working as far away as Mumbai, in Dublin and in Paris, as well as in the City and in Oxford itself.
As an added incentive, may I remind you that it is the policy of the Careers Office and the Development Office to offer a preferential service to students who have attended at least one event. Many of our internships operate on a basis of pre-selection by the College, and attendance at an event will be taken into account when making these selections. If you are considering taking on a summer internship, or would like careers advice and assistance, I strongly recommend that you take part!
Finally, please get in touch with me if I can help with careers advice in general; for example, if you need a trained eye to look over a CV. Although I am a D.Phil. student, I have run a business for many years, and been both an employer and employee. I would also welcome any feedback or comments about the Careers Office so that I can continue to improve this unique service to better meet your needs. Thank you.

We are looking for native GERMAN and native ENGLISH speakers to participate in a study on language processing. The study is currently running and it involves Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), a non-invasive method of stimulating the brain using relatively focal magnetic fields to determine the contribution a brain region makes to a language task. You will be asked to perform a simple language task in your native language.
We are looking for healthy right-handed native German speakers and native English speakers between the ages of 18 and 65 who would be interested in volunteering to participate in this study. We pay £20 and the session takes between 1 and 1.5 hours. For further information or to volunteer, please contact Dr. Gert Westermann (email: gert.westermann@psy.ox.ac.uk, phone: 271 393).
Are you CHATTY & FRIENDLY?
Do you need WORK EXPERIENCE & CASH?
Do you want to have FUN?
Then we have the job for you: chatting to Old Members for a few hours an evening on the 'phone (we'll even pay you for it!).
From 2nd-14th January 12 students will be calling around 1000 Old Members to let them know what's going on at Exeter at the moment. We'll also be asking for their support - both financially and in terms of their commitment to the College through giving advice, attending events and offering student internships.
Last year we raised over £120k to provide hardship grants, maintain the tutorial system and to improve the buildings we live and work in. This year, we hope to raise even more to ensure that Exeter and its students continue to flouish and excel over the coming years...but we also expect to have a lot of fun too - Old Members like to hear about the College today, and many have interesting experiences to share.
It's a great job - just ask anyone who did it last year! Full training is given and no experience is needed - and be encouraged - it's nothing like double-glazing tele-sales. Pay is excellent at £6.61ph (plus a sizable reliability bonus at the end), and you'll be working around 23hrs pw (you do the maths!) so there'll still be time to get some work done as well as spend the hard earned cash! The campaign ends Wednesday 0th week so you should be fine for Collections too.
For more details and an application form email Katrina Hancock in the Development Office (katrina.hancock@exeter.ox.ac.uk) or drop in to 8:3.
What are you waiting for!
The Oxford Internet Institute (http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk) and the Said Business School (http://www.sbs.ox.ac.uk) will be running some simple, computer-based experiments in Oxford over the next two years. We will be studying online surfing behaviour and economic decision making. Nothing complicated, completely anonymous, no hidden agenda, little time and no skills required...
and you get paid for your time in the computer lab
You're normally guaranteed £3-5 just for coming along and you will earn more during the experiment. How much more depends on the experiment (and some of your decisions during that experiment) but in the past our participants would often go home with £10-15 for about an hour's work.
In order to take part, you need to register your name and email address at http://oxlab.oii.ox.ac.uk/public/participant_create.php.
Everyone can join (not only students)! Once you are registered, you will be invited by email to participate in upcoming experiments throughout the year.
We have some opportunities for participation coming up already in December so we do hope you will sign up!
The Oxford eXperimental Laboratory (OXlab) is a joint project by the Oxford Internet Institute and the Said Business School with financial support by the Fell fund. The Principal Investigators on that project are Professor Helen Margetts and Professor Nir Vulkan.
If you have any questions, simply drop us an email at oxlab@oii.ox.ac.uk or check our website at http://oxlab.oii.ox.ac.uk.
Martina Di Simplicio, a SPR in psychiatry, is currently running a research project with the Oxford University Department of Psychiatry.
The project is interested in studying the effects of oxytocin, a natural hormone, on social and emotional information processing. It involves testing healthy male volunteers on a series of psychological computer tests after having received a single dose of oxytocin or placebo.
Oxytocin is a natural hormone which has a number of functions in the body. It is best known for its effects on the reproductive system after childbirth when it helps the uterus contract and stimulates the flow of breast milk. Experimental studies in animals have suggested that oxytocin has another role, namely in the development of social relationships. If this is the case the use of oxytocin might be helpful in certain human conditions such as schizophrenia and autism where people find it hard to establish close relationships.
The aim of the current study is to see whether we can find evidence that a single dose of oxytocin might modify various measures of social performance in healthy volunteers.
Your help would be much appreciated. In addition to travel expenses etc they can also give you £50 for taking part in the study. More detailed information can be found in the attached file.

12 October 2006
Dear Students,
First off a welcome to all the new Fresher's at Exeter this year, and a welcome back to our returning students. Now that 0th Week is over, and everybody has settled back in, I thought it might be a good time to send out a message introducing myself (or perhaps re-introducing myself to some of you.) My name is Daragh McDowell, and I'm the Careers Officer here at Exeter College. The Careers Office is unique to Exeter amongst Oxford colleges, and provides a highly valuable service which I would urge all of you to make use of while you are here.
The Careers Office's primary function is to arrange internships for Exeter Students. To this end we have a wide variety of internships, many of them abroad, in numerous fields. As an example, last year Exeter had students working as far away as Mumbai, for a pharmaceutical company called Nicolas Piramal, as well as in the city for firms such as HSBC and the Economist. However, I also provide some basic advice on careers skills and applications, and would be more than happy to talk to any of you about any careers related issues you'd like to discuss. Additionally, if you already have a pretty good idea of what kind of career you want to pursue, send me an e-mail and I'll be sure to send you any information relating to your interests as it comes into the office.
Above all we are looking for as much input from the student body as possible. We need to know what most of you are studying, and what careers you are interested in pursuing so we can tailor our internships program to your needs. So I would request that any comments, queries, questions, requests etc. you have be directed to me via e-mail (careers (at) exeter.ox.ac.uk) so we can continue to improve this unique service to better meet your needs. I should also point out that I'm not a professor or full-time employee of the college. I'm a graduate student, which means you'll often find me hanging out in the MCR, walking round the quad, sitting in the Fellow's Garden or simply queuing for lunch so feel free to just approach me if you have any questions.
Have a good Michaelmas!
Daragh McDowell,
Careers Officer,

Dear Students,
The Careers Office is very pleased to announce that on Friday November 17th we will be hosting a Careers Evening open to all students of the College. The night will begin with a CV writing workshop, followed by a buffet supper and careers talks from representatives from:
The whole event will start at 7pm and takes place in the Drawing Room of the Rector's Lodgings. As stated, there will be a free buffet supper, but this does mean we will need to get an idea of numbers for the event. Please simply reply to Daragh McDowell's email concerning this event if you'd like to attend.
This is a fantastic opportunity for those of you who are still deciding on your career path to talk to professionals from a diverse range of fields. For those of you looking for a summer placement, its a great way to get a leg up on the applications.
On a final note, its the policy of the Careers Office and the Development Office to offer preferential service to students who have attended at least one of these events. We will be making note of who attends. Many of our internships operate on a basis of pre-selection by the college, and attendance of our Careers Evenings will be taken into account when making these selections. If you are considering taking on a summer internship, or would like careers advice and assistance from the Development Office, we strongly recommend that you come to this evening. If you cannot make it to the event on the 17th, we are hosting Dr. Maneesh Nerurkar form Nicolas Piramal Pharmaceuticals in the lodgings on the 20th, and Vincent Denby-Wilkes from Electricite de France on the 27th. Mailings will be sent out for both these events.
