As you all know, the situation in Exeter House is currently in flux – the site we live on will change as of next year, there will continue to be construction work, and the current Accommodations Manager is departing. It is therefore somewhat difficult to predict what exactly will be expected of the Exeter House President next year.
What I feel I can promise you in any event, if you choose me over RON, are two things: I’ll be an efficient point of first contact and I’ll try to create a community at the Exeter House.
First, I will communicate as much as possible with College officials, the new Accommodations Manager and Exeter House residents themselves. I will not consider any problem unworthy of my attention and try to be helpful in all matters that will come to me – from the teething problems of the new building, to security (especially of bikes), the levels of rent, noise at night, supply of dishes and kitchen utensils, to repairs.
Second, I’ll try to facilitate a sense of graduate community in the new accommodation. I will try to create a welcoming environment for incoming residents (I believe that especially international students will appreciate an “orientation” in the first couple of weeks. I will also organize at least one bigger social event per term (party, B-B-Q, pot-luck dinner) and try to encourage regular game nights or movie nights.

My name is May Huang, and I just switched my programme from Mst to Mphil in German literature, which means that I will be staying on for one more year. I want to run for this position because I had a very warm welcome fresher’s week last year organized by Hannah, and found it a very important and useful week for all the new students in terms of getting to know everyone in college and settling down, so I really want to do the same thing to all the new potential MCR members as in return. I had a good chat with Hannah and have a gist of what should be going on in the naught week, what the fresher’s rep will be responsible for and who/when to get in contact for each thing. (Exeter house party, pub crawl, wine and cheese, tea and cake, parenting scheme, parent meeting lunch, graduate fresher’s dinner…and so on)
That’s a general idea of what I will be doing if I am elected, and personally I think what I could be contributing is perhaps that I can bombard the new students with lots of random information and experience that I have gained this year through all my procrastination. Such as where to go shopping, sale information, eatery recommendations. (My goal in the first year is to try all the restaurants on George Street and I achieved that!) Plus I’ve been told that I will need a very loud voice to be fresher’s rep so that I don’t lose my voice immediately on the first day, and I think I am pretty much qualified for that. Other than that, I will be very friendly and open to all the new students!
