Graduate Welfare

MCR Graduate Welfare Officer
The MCR Graduate Welfare Officer is Hannah Perrin. She represents the general concerns of all members of the graduate community, particularly in the areas of welfare, personal security, accommodation and academic needs.
Tutor for Graduates
The Tutor for Graduates (Prof Frank Close, 11:11, internal tel 79673) is responsible for the academic and personal welfare of graduate students in the college.
Women's Adviser
The Women's Adviser (Dr Maureen Taylor, 10:10, internal tel 79604) is available to assist with the personal or academic difficulties of women students at Exeter.

Financial Support

Graduate Scholarships
The college offers various scholarships, which are listed at http://www.exeter.ox.ac.uk/news/studentships. Special attention should be drawn to the Amelia Jackson Scholarships, which are available to existing Exeter graduates only. The studentship pays College fees, University fees up to the European Union rate, and a maintenance grant for a period of one year. Usually two to three awards are granted each year.
Grants
The college makes grants to enable graduate students to travel to conferences related to their research. It is a condition of admission that graduates can demonstrate that they are able to meet the full expenses of their intended course; but in special cases the college can also make grants and loans to alleviate unexpected financial hardship. Forms can be found in our downloads section or on the internal pages of the Exeter College website.

Medical Help

In emergency dial 999.
First Aid
The porters' lodge on 01865 279600 should be advised if first aid attention is required. The only casualty department (= emergency health care) is at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Headington (tel 01865 220208), but this can mean long waiting times, so if you can get help elsewhere such as the College Nurse or the College Doctor, then do. For eye emergencies, call the Eye Hospital, Radcliffe Infirmary, Woodstock Road, tel 01865 224800.
College Nurse
The College Nurse (Mrs Jan Fleming) has a surgery in 7:1, tel 01865 279639. Surgery hours are 9:30-ll:30am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 9:30-10:30am on Tuesday and Thursday. She can give treatment for all sorts of minor problems, give advice on more serious ones, arrange prescriptions and help with stress management.
College Doctors
The College Doctors are Dr Neil MacLennan and Dr Ann McPherson, 19 Beaumont Street, Oxford, tel 01865 240501. General surgery hours are 8:30am-12:30pm and 2-6pm Monday to Friday; Saturday 9:30-11am for urgent problems only. You can make routine appointments with them or any of their partners. Consultations with doctors are free, but if they give you a prescription to have filled at a pharmacy, this will cost you approximately £7.
Contraception is available free from the doctors or at the Alec Turnbull Clinic on Cowley Road. A condom machine is located at the bottom of Staircase 6. Limited emergency supplies will be kept in the MCR loo cabinet. Rape alarms are available from the Welfare Officer upon request.
Dentists
Ox Brookes run a dental clinic called Studental and they have agreed to allow all students from the university to go there for check ups and more urgent work.
The gov. has abolished registration so when you phone for an appointment you just need to say which college you are from and to take your student card with you as proof.
There are leaflets about Studental outside the college nurse's room.

Nightline

NightlineNightline (01865) (2)70270 is a confidential listening, support and information service run by students for students. You can either call them or drop into their office at 16 Wellington Square between 8am and 8pm every night from 0th week to 9th week. They can call you back and you can talk about anything you want to.

Oxford University Student Union

Oxford University Student Union (OUSU) is the student union for the whole university. As a body it serves to promote your interests at a university level and also offers you a range of services. The MCR is one of its constituent organisations and thus enjoys access to its various services.

Student Advice Service

The Student Advice Service is a confidential listening and advice service and aims to provide a space for students to talk over their worries in confidence, and to offer advice on a range of issues which students might encounter during their time at Oxford. Members of the service can provide you with both practical advice as well as with support for personal issues. The advisers are all experienced in dealing with students and are committed to help you in a supportive environment. The Service runs during office hours and you can either drop into OUSU at Thomas Hull House (although you might have to wait for the appropriate member of the service to be free) or make an appointment by calling OUSU on 01865 288450/1 or by emailing advice@ousu.org.

Peer Support

Peer Supporters are trained by the University Counselling Service as an impartial ear for anyone in college to talk to about absolutely anything.
Oxford is permanently high-stress and if there are things bothering you everything can very quickly get on top of you. Sometimes you can feel you are burdening your friends, or that you just don’t want them to know about a particular issue; perhaps you feel your problem isn't 'serious' enough that you need to go to a senior member of college and yet it's still worrying; perhaps you want to talk to someone who doesn't know you just to get something off your chest.
You dictate the terms; you can talk for as long as you like, whenever you like, about whatever you like.
Most importantly, Peer Support is confidential, we don't judge or instruct, and people really do approach us with problems big and small.
You can email, you can phone, you can come to their rooms for tea – use this excellent service!

Religious Support

The College Chaplain (The Rev Helen Orchard) offers counsel and pastoral support to all members of Exeter College, whatever their religious beliefs. Her room is in 9:8, tel 01865 279610.
The Freshers' Fair will also include spiritual communities at Oxford.
